Penelope Cruz Sanchez

Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, as well as Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser from Madrid. When she was a toddler and a devoted performer, and would reenact commercials on TV for the entertainment of her family. But, she decided to focus her efforts on dance. After pursuing classical ballet for nine years in the Spanish National Conservatory, she continued her education under a variety of highly acclaimed dancers. Her true calling was discovered at the age 15 after she defeated over 300 contestants in an audition for a talent agency. She was then offered roles in Spanish television and music videos. This led to a number of more roles, which opened the doors to a career in the world of big screens. Cruz was first seen in a movie in The Greek Labyrinth (1993) (The Greek Labyrinth), then appeared briefly in the Timothy Dalton thriller Framed (1992). Her final film was the Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992), in which she played one of four sisters competing for the love of a beautiful army deserter. This film won many Goyas, Spanish equivalent of Academy Awards. Cruz became a renowned Spanish actress after her three-to-four films per year that she added to her resume. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). It was a turning point for her in 1998 when the film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) brought her a award for the Best Actress Goya. Cruz went on to make several more journeys into films with English subtitles, but All About My Mother (1999) was her first big international success. She played a chaste, but well meaning nun. Cruz was highly sought-after on both sides of the Atlantic because her film was awarded numerous awards and accolades.
